Essential element of future space activities is economic means of transportation to and from earth orbit -- reusable aerospace transport system; for 3 yr Lockheed-California Co has been engaged in design evolution studies of winged, lifting, recoverable aerospace transport systems; some of results are presented in form of design, performance, and operational considerations in evolution of typical reusable aerospace transport system; vehicle will consist of launch vehicle (first stage) and passenger vehicle (second stage); characteristics of each stage and vehicle analysis; summary of comparison of horizontal and vertical-take-off launch modes in terms of performance, ground-complex characteristics, and total cost is shown.
