Research man-rated submersibles must be capable of descending thousands of feet into ocean; paper describes evaluation program for d-c electric motors of Reynolds International, Inc, submarine, Aluminaut; two of these motors are for propulsion, and one is for vertical ascent and descent; each propulsion unit consists of 5-hp d-c motor, and reduction gear, both flooded with silicone fluid equalized to sea pressure; description of various performance tests used to evaluate motors which included general steady-state operation, efficiency, system dynamics, inspection, and post-inspection tests, and hydrostatic tests.
