Problem of designing ships for reduced maintenance is considered against background of trends in increasing size of tankers and plans for reducing complement to less than 30 men; it is noted that two particular aspects of tanker trading which aggravate difficulties of regular planned maintenance are high proportion of time spent at sea and world-wide nature of trade, with regular runs being exception.
