Usefulness of undulating plates for underwater propulsion was investigated experimentally, and by reviewing literature; watercraft, consisting of two aircraft drop tanks, which act as floats and are interconnected in catamaran fashion by steel framework, was built; undulating plate of small aspect ratio is mounted horizontally in centerline about 2 ft below water level; ten different plates were tested; maximum speed obtained was 5.1 fps; maximum propulsive efficiencies obtained in tests were only 16%; however, theoretical work indicates that extremely high efficiencies may occur in certain designs.
