Marine technology faces new challenges stemming from expanding activity in oceanography and growing need to tap resources of deep ocean for food and minerals; new concepts in ships, submarines, and variety of surfaces and submerged platforms to support ocean exploration and ocean industry are increasingly in demand; performance of displacement ships, submarines, hydrofoil craft, and air-cushion (surface-effect) ships are compared in graph which interrelates speed, power, and displacement; areas of progress made and areas where research is needed are outlined.
