Design of commercial airplane from purely economic standpoint is taken up; meeting special requirements of operators; passengers versus speed; combination of engines studied for seven different values of speed, and results obtained for 84 hypothetical airplanes; wing loading; landing speed; very high speed not economical for weight carrying airplanes; pay load is greatly increased by use of high power loadings with its resultant decrease in maximum speed. Paper presented before Am. Soc. Mech. Engrs., previously indexed from Advanced Paper for mtg., Mar. 12, 1930.
