In 1930 Chicago, Milwaukee, St. Paul and Pacific Railroad received 14 high speed, Class F6 4-6-4 type locomotives for heavy passenger train service; 7 mo later piston rod on one of engines failed by breaking at crosshead fit; this was first of similar failures; various kinds of steel tried to find one that would give satisfactory service; changes in design and size of rods made to improve performance; information developed during 6-yr period of such rating.
