Modern ships corrode more rapidly than is desirable; example of rapid pitting analyzed to determine cause; it appears that possible agent is free electricity; evidence given of similarity in attack on steel electrodes immersed in sea water with electric current flowing; specimens coated with usual protective paints or galvanized, also with zinc protectors and given similar treatment, show weakness of protectors against electrical action.
