Built at Fore River Yard of Bethlehem Steel Co, vessels represent latest in design and construction toward safety against hazards of fire and collision; length oa 493 ft 6 in.; beam molded 64 ft; depth to promenade deck 46 ft 9 in.; equipped with two Bethlehem cross compound, double reduction geared turbines each having normal rating of 4500 shp at 90 rpm when operated at 450 lb steam pressure with final temperature of 740 F and 28.4 in. of vacuum.
