In design of these engines, which are classified as "XS.1" and "XS.2," several interesting features are incorporated, among them being use of poppet valve gears of two different types; design features of frames, cylinders and springs; cylinders 16 in. by 26 in.; driving wheels 6 ft. 2 in.; boiler pressure 225 lb. per sq. in.; tractive force at 85 per cent of boiler 34,400 lb.; total engine weight in working order 108 tons; total engine wheelbase 35 ft. 5 in.
