Loads result either from crossflow at submerged body (local loads) or from wake translation over submerged body (induced loads); recently obtained static results indicate that for certain critical distances between wake source and submerged body, there is yet another type of induced load; quasi-steady two-degree-of-freedom analysis indicates that two types of dynamic instability can occur; first is result of upstream communication loads and occurs for critical wake-source distances; second occurs for greater than critical distances as result of upstream communication loads associated with shock-induced separation occurring on tow rope forward of decelerator; stability criteria are derived for both cases.
