Aerodynamic flight regimes are defined as speeds up to Mach 0.8 (subsonic), Mach 1 to 5 (supersonic), Mach 5 to 25 (hypersonic), and 25,000 fps (orbital); preliminary selection of basic materials for flight vehicles is based on Mach number-altitude orientation, which includes turbulent flow to laminar flow location and effects; structural weights and materials as function of temperature are presented for both protected and unprotected primary structures; design considerations and material selections for inlets, nose cones, leading edges, and transparencies are considered.
