Requirements for low-level, high-speed penetration to target; design constraints on pitch command system and effects of load factor, flight path angle, and type of command display on system design and performance; during incorporation of manual terrain-following systems into two versions of F-4 airplane, fixed base flight simulators were used to optimize system design; as result of studies, each system was modified to provide improved performance and to obtain command display acceptable to pilot; scoring technique that allows optimization of system parameters without tailoring system to particular terrain type was developed.
