Effects of cycle parameters on engine performance at typical cruise condition are examined; high-bypass h-p cycles are shown to have potential for large improvement in specific fuel consumption compared to present-day turbofan cycles; engine and installation concept suitable for bypass ratios in 5-to-10 range is described; results of parametric analysis of engine and installation characteristics are used to compute relative aircraft range as function of cycle parameters assuming cruise sizing of engines; with use of air-cooled turbine temperatures, increases in bypass ratio up to value of 10 studied and increases in cycle pressure ratio up to value of 30 studied yield improvements in range; takeoff requirements are considered and shown to have little effect upon trends; it is pointed out that high-bypass engines need not be greatly different from current turbofans in respect to takeoff to cruise thrust relationship.
