Tug pilot's aim is to deliver sailplane to height and position required, in shortest possible time and with minimum of effort; tug aircraft has to provide stable platform for sailplane to keep formation upon making gentle burns only and climbing as quickly as possible at steady speed of around 55 to 60 mph; achieving maximum rate of climb relies on tug pilot's local knowledge, and his ability to use those same thermals as glider pilot uses; technique of air retrievals and training of students.
