In designing second series of 25 kv a-c locomotives, British Rail adopted axle-hung, nose suspended traction motors; tests revealed that difference in effects of track shock between flexible drives and axle mountings was not sufficient to cause trouble; feature of some movement of commutator bars under brushes lessened possibility of burnout at standstill; British Rail hopes to overcome tradition and prejudice by performance of these motors.
