Historical development of electric railway systems in United States up to present time is described; railway electrification reached its peak during 1930's; with advent of diesel and diesel-electric locomotives, it declined markedly from peak of more than 4000 km of electrified trackage to about 2900 km in 1966; railway systems such as Pennsylvania, New York, New Haven and Hartford, New York Central, and Milwaukee Road are discussed.
