Monorail is defined as transport system which does not depend on width of track to keep vehicle upright; two basic types, namely supported and suspended, are discussed and illustrated; only two monorail systems at present operate full scale passenger service -- one, of suspended type, is 60 yr old, in Wuppertal, West Germany, and other is supported type in Tokyo, Japan; engineering details are given for latter; it is suggested that future of monorails is in urban-suburban passenger transport where right-of-way problems make surface lines impracticable.
