Free turbine type of gas turbine, because of its light weight, compactness, and inherent torque characteristics, permits design of new type of passenger train with light weight, high performance, and good economy; environmental factors involved and economic comparison between turbine and electric energy costs are presented; systems approach employed shows that it is more economical to reduce train resistance than to increase horsepower for given level of performance; four ways of reducing resistance are use of high strength light weight structure, light weight banking suspension system, aerodynamic streamlining, and single axles; economic comparison of Turbo-Train with diesel powered train.
