Practice of using tapes produced by mechanical track-inspection car in helping to formulate its track-maintenance programs employed at Boston and Maine is outlined; two auxiliary systems are introduced as result of continuing effort to improve usefulness of car; first was installation of Veeder-Root Model 1807 impulse counter as means of digitalizing one of traces produced on recording tape during operation of car; second auxiliary system placed on car recently is pressure paint-spraying system designed to mark track at locations where low spots, primarily joint areas, and wide gage exceed preset limit.
