Control system developed to meet British Railways' requirements in which continuous control of cars throughout yard enables humping speeds to be increased; system uses large number of small units each with speed-sensing device built into it; units can be made to respond to wide ranges in car speed so that cars can be made to run at different speeds on different parts of system; there are two types of unit, retarder and booster/retarder; yard laid out with Dowty control system consists of acceleration section, switching area, deceleration section, and sorting sidings.
