Need for launch vehicles in Intermediate and Post Saturn categories is considered and evolution of such systems from current technology is indicated; second and third generation launch vehicles to be anticipated for late 1970 and decade of eighties are examined showing that 1 1/2-stage vehicles consisting of solid or liquid rockets parallel stage to liquid core offer enhanced reliability and considerable payload flexibility; advantages that may accrue and some of key related technology problems of partial or full recovery and reuse are shown.
