Detonation characteristics of ammonium perchlorate-polyurethane composite propellants are discussed quantitatively in terms of processes that establish energy release rate in shocked propellant; detonability of essentially nonporous propellant is controlled by shock initiation time of oxidizer and diffusion-controlled burning rate of gasified binder; detonability of porous propellant is controlled by concentration of hot-spot producing voids in propellant; critical diameters for detonation are very large for nonporous propellants, but decrease rapidly as concentration of pores in propellant is increased.
