Use of staged solid-propellant rocket vehicle that is capable of achieving high-velocity, long-duration environments unavailable at ground-based facilities is proposed for aerodynamic flight testing; only operational or near-operational, aerodynamically stabilized vehicles operating within atmosphere are considered which include single-stage meteorological rockets with 10-lb payloads, up to rockets with 200-lb payloads; attainable test spectrum is governed by rocket motors, payload weight, and drag; use of such vehicles, operation problems, and approximate costs are discussed.
