It is suggested diesel propulsion will remain attractive because -- two-stroke slow-running diesel engines with cylinder bore from 440 up to 1050 mm cover power range from 3000 to nearly 40,000 shp, which meets owner's demands even for largest type of ships; for special applications, new medium-speed engines, suitable for multi-diesel geared propulsion plants are available in power range from 3000 up to 45,000 shp; latest development in turbocharging systems and proper application of waste-heat'recuperation allows for high useful thermodynamic efficiency; with automation, crew reduction is possible.
