Question of whether automation should be extended to navigation of ship is considered, and possible system is outlined; "Autonav" vessel envisaged is intended to operate with minimum assistance from shore, but advantages of weather routing suggest that two-way data link would be worthwhile; factors and equipment are discussed in relation to ship, cargo, route, and terminal facilities, including also large tanker operating between off-shore points.
