Paper takes three questions which must be answered whenever shipowner decides to build ship (Why build this ship; Why build it like this; Why build it now;), examines previous works on subject and finds most of them to be faulty, and presents two principal variations of ` discounted cash flow' technique (net present value and incremental yield) as appropriate for answering all these questions simultaneously; difficulties, including problem of uncertainty, in application of techniques to ship designs are described, and methods suggested for overcoming them.
