Results of tests made in laboratory of British Ship Research Assn, on effect of insert plates and shape of coamings; insert plates reduce stress concentration, reduction being function of their thickness; however, this requires considerable welding which increases production costs and possibility of local cracking; designs such as increased radius of curvature in corner or parabolic shape, may prove more economical and structurally effective; for all practical purposes there is no difference in stress concentration between hatch corners fitted with rounded or rectangular coamings with extension brackets.
