Method used at New York Central for straightening rail in track with machine designed for this purpose is described; unit, called RMC joint straightener, grasps underside of rail at joint and exerts lifting force of about 132 tons between 2 legs of "A"-frame; rail ends and joint bars are straightened predetermined amount; limit switches prevent over-bending; ties under joint are then tamped to maintain surface obtained by straightening operation.
