Saturn program shows rewards to be gained by improving existing design; it began with four research and development vehicles, grouped as Block I, which were modified for Block II of six vehicles; succeeding group, Saturn IB, received substantial changes; modifications have yielded gain of 6000 lb in payload capacity and may produce total gain of over 11,000 lb; characteristics of Saturn I and Saturn IB configurations; performance improvement features under study to increase payload capability and three additional modifications tentatively planned for S-IVB stages on SA-201 and subsequent vehicles.
