Studies confirmed application of pressure-sensitive combustion time lag to transverse and longitudinal modes of HF combustion instability; tests must be considered in transverse mode case; extension of theory of transverse mode combustion instability, which includes linearized velocity effects, is described; physical mechanism is suggested in enhancement of reactant mixing, which can be affected by transverse components of gas velocity; analysis predicts that tangential velocity perturbation may have strong destabilizing effect on spinning tangential modes but will have no effect on standing modes.
