Typical electric engine consists of electric thrustor having propellant feed system, electrical power-conditioning equipment, and electrical power supply; powerplant consists of latter two; general requirements for electric engine, based on manned Mars and unmanned missions, are tabulated; summary of current thrustor and electric powerplant concepts, their development status, and some of problems to be resolved.
