Definition of terms of rotary wing aircraft, namely, helicopter, pure, compound, and convertible helicopter, and autogiro; description of rigid-rotor flight characteristics, and XH-51A pure helicopter; basic XH-51A was converted to compound version with modifications consisting of adding wing of 70-sq ft area, single Pratt and Whitney J-60, 2500-lb thrust jet engine on left side, and battery pod on right wing tip to offset some of large lateral center of gravity shift; additional changes introduced and results of tests showing high speed performance of aircraft without compromising low speed and hover capabilities.
