To show improvements achieved, data are compared of following helicopters -- Model 360 (1947), UH-12E (1958) and Ten 99 (1965); helicopter component characteristics and problems of tip jet design; example of Hiller Model 1123 tip turbojet powered crane; machine, with payload of 12 tons and fuel for radius of 50 nautical mi, is capable of hovering at 6000 ft on 95 F day, and it can fly with half its engines inoperative; under standard day conditions, machine can carry payload of 60,000 lb over 20 mi radius or be ferried distance of 700 mi; design studies carried out on Continental J69-T29 1700-lb thrust engine, and changes made to engine to be tip mounted.
