At open pit mine of Kennecott Copper Corp, Bingham Canyon, Utah, 79 trucks replace rail system to remove 216,000 tons of waste each day; new electric shovels, with 24-ton bites of rock and earth on around-the-clock schedule, seven days/week, are loading trucks; rotary drills with 80-ft masts are drilling 12 1/4 in. blast holes in terraced benches of pit; factors determining optimum use of equipment in haulage operation such as tonnage to be moved, grade and length of hauls, equipment capacity, maintenance, and weather conditions, were evaluated; method which uses computers to analyze variables is presented.
