Certain amount of engine braking can be achieved by fitting to internal combustion engine exhaust brake system to limit escape of exhaust gases from engine; study made to determine influence of compression ratio on braking capacity of engine with exhaust brake retarder manufactured by E.A.Pavey, Guildford, N.S.W., Australia, and actual cycle occurring in engine; cylinder pressure diagrams were taken at 2000 rpm for compression rates of 20:1, 17.5:1, 15:1, 12.5:1, 10:1 and 7.5:1; results show that considerable pressure differential can be maintained across piston on exhaust stroke.
