Omega is very-long-range, radio navigation system which operates in VL F portion of radio spectrum, presently at frequency of 10.2 kc; flight tests have shown it to be capable of ranges greater than 7000 nautical mi and that only 6 transmitting stations will be required to provide coverage over entire earth with position fixes accurate to 1 mi or less; system can be used by aircraft, surface ships, and submerged submarines; equipment for aircraft and shipboard use is being developed at U S Naval Research Laboratory.
