In lunar exploration program, orbital rendezvous requires joining in orbit of masses of 100 tons, moving at velocity of 4 mi/sec with differential velocity of only few fps, which must be brought together softly at correct spot and in close alignment to permit mechanical engagement; requirements for docking structures, automatic connectors, shock absorbers, etc, demand new design concepts; proposed orbital liquid-oxygen tanker design which elimi nates all structural connection to tank walls; role of orbital launch facility (OLF) to improve mission reliability and reduce overall mission support effort.
