Based on inspection of more than 1000 tanker cargo compartments, types of corrosion are classified by presence or absence of ballast water and petroleum material cargoes of low or high viscosity; pitting in crude tankers is explained as simple galvanic corrosion; zinc systems appear to be more economical than magnesium cathodic protection systems; fresh water rinsing gives benefits.
