Review of concept and completely flexible single-membrane structures under development by NASA; flexible, single-membrane wings give lift-drag (L/D) ratios up to about three, and much higher L/D may be obtained by addition of stiffening and proper shaping; in general, for greater value of L/D, more stiffening is required, with its attendant greater weight, volume, and complexity in packaging and deployment; variety of flexible-wing structures and maximum lift-drag ratios that have been achieved in NASA wind-tunnel tests are indicated; possible applications.
