With ability to fly slowly and to utilize small strips, of 1500 ft or even shorter, STOL aircraft can be salvation of short-haul market at legs out to 300 mi; economies resulting from use of STOL vs VTOL craft can run from three to five times or more in favor of STOL; direct operating costs run 4 to 5 cents per seat mile or less, whereas cost greater than 20 cents per seat mile is usual for helicopter equivalent; practical demonstration study is urged.
