Use of finite-state machines to represent arbitrary analog transducers and human operator in his performance of flight control is considered; series of tasks of increasing difficulty are presented, ranging from characterization of relatively simple linear analog "pilots", through more complex nonlinear analog "pilots", to human pilot acting both in simulator and in flight; findings demonstrate that finite-state machines do offer suitable means for representing human operator in terms of his stimulus-response behavior with respect to nonconvergent tracking tasks.
