Major considerations leading to development of L-1011 configuration selection, and operating requirements used in establishing basic design of airplane are presented; parametric study and design trade study together with airline operations feedback, systematically and rationally applied to requirements, configuration, and design have been extensively used; examples of selected studies; aerodynamic, propulsion, and guidance and control characteristics and their effect on flight operations and economics are examined.
