Since presentation of earlier paper (see Engineering Index 1959 p 1268), size of tankers has increased greatly; concurrently, important extensions of knowledge on response of ships to forces of sea have been made; paper deals with problem of extrapolating longitudinal strength standards and also with changes in design resulting from introduction of corrosion control, increase in length of tanks and use of higher tensile steel; freeboard for large tankers is considered and some remarks are made on experience gained from large tankers in service.
