Importance of oceanography and its sub-fields for naval operations is illustrated by specific examples; description of new laboratories developed to collect oceanic data such as manned buoy, designed by J.Cousteau, FLIP (floating instrument platform), manned U S Navy seagoing laboratory for ocean studies, SPAR (seagoing platform for acoustic research) vehicle built for Naval Ordnance Laboratory, NOMAD (naval oceanographic meteorological automatic device) buoy, etc; under development is system for predicting phenomena that affect sonar performance in detection of submarines, called ASWEPS (antisubmarine warfare environmental prediction system).
