Experience of past two years in military evaluation of ground effect machine is summarized and trials undertaken in support of most likely military roles are described, carried out on six different types of hovercraft by Interservice Hovercraft Trials Unit; it is combination of air-cushion principle with flexible structures that offers Royal Navy prospect of 90-knot oceangoing ship, British Army truly amphibious logistic support vehicle, and Royal Air Force craft capable of airfield crash reserve performance that exceeds even that of helicopter.
