In addition to being able to absorb impact equivalent to free fall of aircraft of 27 in., undercarriage must have good taxiing characteristics, must be light in weight, take up as little space as possible, and must have simple retraction arrangement; extensive laboratory tests have resulted in development of number of undercarriages to meet these requirements better, each of which is discussed.
