One of most extensive examples of continuous rail welding was completed in 1943 by Elgin, Joliet and Eastern Railroad between Joliet and Coynes, Illinois; total length is 5 1/2 mi, and longest individual rail is 3503 ft; welding procedure described; rails were welded at depot, and were then moved in continuous strings, up to 1750 ft long, to sites at which they were to be laid in.
