Two general classes of double reduction gears used on merchant vessels are "articulated" type and "nested" gear; difference in torsional characteristics of two arises from different type of connection between slow speed pinions and high speed gears; first or one-noded critical speed is easily approximated by calculating only inertia of propeller and flexibility of line shafting; second or 2-noded critical speed is dependent on gear and turbines; article chiefly concerned with 2-noded critical speed.
