It is generally recognized that oil fired steam cargo vessels of about 10,000 tons with speed of 10 knots cannot be considered economical post war proposition; conversion of ships to more economical method of propulsion may become one of post war shipping problems; case is put forward for medium speed engines, driving through reduction gears and general outlay of such arrangement embodying Ruston 4-cycle engines is shown in drawing.
